Miwa Imamura

Communication Leadership Award Committee Chair, 2014

Recipient; Ms. Mami Sato (Paralympian)

For Best Speaker of the Year in the area of heart touching and influential speeches.
Toastmasters District 76 (Japan Office) presents the Communication Leadership Award of this year to Ms. Mami Sato, a Paralympian who touched many hearts and helped Tokyo win the bid for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Mami Sato lost her leg to cancer, nearly lost her family to the 2011 tsunami, but she has competed at 3 Paralympics and has become one of the movement's most accomplished ambassadors and inspirational storytellers. Her speech, imbibed with real experiences, often touched our hearts. Also, her unwavering thankfulness toward the people who supported her is an exemplar of servant leadership.

Reasons for the Award

* Ms. Mami Sato has shown unparalleled communication skill in touching the hearts and minds of the community through her sports activities during the Tohoku earthquake recovery and by cultivating future Paralympians. She has demonstrated the true essence of the communication that we study everyday by connecting people together. While Ms. Mami Sato has weathered many difficult experiences, her unwavering positive attitude and dedication to her causes continues to inspire others.

* By proactively outreaching to others and by sharing her own experiences through lecture activities such as school visits and workshops she has profoundly embodied the essence of leadership, which requires both enthusiasm and a willingness to act.
