Who in the World is the LGET!?

Metthew D. Ownby
LGET (Lieutenant Governor Education and Training)

Who in the World is the LGET!?
It is a Toastmasters new year and some of you may be wondering just who is the world is the LGET? (Which is Lt. Governor of Eduction and Training, long isn't it?) You may have the image of some guy giving saying a few flowery words at a contest or special occasion, but what does that really matter to you in your club?

That Guy that Helps You in about Three
The LGET is mainly responsible for three things that help your club be even better:

  • Coordinating of Officer Training - well trained officers make a better club and better meetings
  • Coordinating of Contests – participants in contest become better speakers at the regular meetings
  • Education Sessions at Conferences – learn something new so you can do more at your meetings

Heart, Head, and Hands
Way before I became a LGET, I like you, joined a Toastmasters to become a better speaker. It was when I was a first year college student at Powercatmasters TMC in Manhattan, Kansas (the little apple) that I joined my first club. But as I learned and grew, I came to notice that we all wish to become better communicators not just be better speakers but to actually accomplish something by that communication. However, communication skill alone is not enough. I learned that we all need three things:
  • Heart – the passion to accomplish your dreams, and compassion to help other reach theirs
  • Head – the basic knowledge of communication, planning, and mentoring skills, etc.
  • Hands – the actual ability to speak and lead effectively.

What this translate to my term as LGET is as follows:
  • Heart - service and hospitality to all clubs, better teamwork between clubs at all events
  • Head - useful and truly educational sessions, effective use of current IT technology
  • Hands – effective presentations and competent management of training, contests, and etc.

Become Better than Ever
It is with the balance of these three skills that we can succeed not only in Toastmasters, but also at work and at home. So, remember that the LGET is not some lofty bigwig tell you what you have do to but here to help you become a better speaker, a better leader, and perhaps one day a Lt. Governor of Education and Training, LGET, like me. Here is to another great year!
