Officers Training Reports
Division A First Club Officer Training
Daniel Ross
Division A Governor
Division A Governor
July 26, 2009 (Sunday) Edogawa Green Palace 10:30 ~ 16:40
Our training was bilingual and was opened to all members in Division A. Why? Because regular members become club officers, eventually. [“Image training.”] We also know that the more members who understand the officer roles, the more people there are to fill in and help out when an officer is unexpectedly sick, injured, absent or otherwise unable to attend meetings. We decided to open the knowledge to everyone, as far and as wide as possible. It is always good to develop and grow as many new (potential) leaders as possible. This ensures strength of clubs, resiliency and continuity.
We also wanted to give everyone a well rounded perspective. A great club exists because of teamwork. If officers understand each others’ roles, they usually work more smoothly together as a team.
86 people attended our training. 2 were presidents of forming clubs and 7 others were regular members (not currently holding officer positions). The officers and regular members got to better understand how their club works, and what all of their different club officers actually do. Everyone learned something from different angles and viewpoints.
All of the Area Governors worked very hard leading up to the training as well as on the day of the training. They are a great team to work with. Because of their teamwork, the whole event went extremely smoothly. (Thanks to: AGs Kobayashi, Kubota, Brassard, Ajioka. See details on names in chart below.)
There was also strict time-keeping for each session. This kept the event on-time and moving along smoothly without any overtime of any sessions. Everyone had a fair segment of time for their presentation and the day ended on time. Very smooth. (Thanks to: AG Brassard who was the excellent time-keeper.)
Also, a very hearty thank you of appreciation to all of the presenters (see chart below). We were basically able to draw on presenters FROM Division A only. This was another plus. This gave more chances to new presenters who did extremely well. I do not think anyone could tell who was a veteran Officer training presenter and who was a relative “newbie.” Every presentation was very high quality [content and/or delivery]. This shows the effectiveness of active, regular TM club speeches and club participation. We discovered a lot of new talent that we can draw on in the future in Division A. We look forward to giving more chances to others and encouraging more members to try leadership within the Division.
Please see the topics below [see chart].
We covered the topics suggested (required?) in the training manual outlines from TMI. There were some shortcomings with this approach. There was a lot of information so it was hard for everyone to digest it all. Due to the great feedback from participants, we are planning a very different approach to our 2nd training. [Learn by doing!]
The First training was mostly linear. [Our thinking was to give everyone the same exposure to all the topics required by TMI.] However, we want to change this for our Second Club Officer Training. [Thank you, again, to all participants for your valuable feedback. We have listened to you and we have learned. Your feedback has been very helpful to us.]
The Second training [January 10, 2010 in Sendai] will have multiple, simultaneous sessions with many small group discussion circles.
Second Training Focus: Officers sharing their club’s success stories and ideas. All participants will have a chance to share their leadership ideas and experiences with other clubs. Small groups to discuss club problems and troubleshoot together (synergy). Interactive, exciting and dynamic learning experience. “Hands-on.”
The Second training will be held in the beautiful city of Sendai which many Toastmasters from the Tokyo-Tsukuba-Chiba-Saitama area have lived in, worked in, or traveled to on business. There are also family sightseeing spots nearby for spouses and children. (Matsushima, Yamadera, onsens, skiing/snowboarding.)
