Preparation for Running the Contest

The goal of this contest support page is help support host clubs who will run area, division, and district level speech contest. These resources are especially for clubs that do not have much in the way of available references.

A large difference between these contests and the club level (or in-house) contest is that since members from other clubs will attend the event, special arrangement need to be made, such as setting up registration, getting stage equipment, etc. Then you got to get the mikes set up, and include special remarks by the governor in the program. The list goes on and on. By just thinking about the all the differences in the program alone panic can start to set in.

However, Never Fear! The following reference materials on this page are ready just for you. Take heart and try out the job of hosting a contest. Please use them, take a leading role, and run a great fun filled contest! You just might end up do better than you think.

The reference is based on an actual contest script that was run not to long ago.

Contest Script (As Run by the Contest Chair)

The following is the basic contest speech script for the contest. While it is set up for the district conference, it has many points in common with area and division levels.

*** Please note that below script is Japanese version. Educational Committee is now preparing the English version. (February 21, 2011) / English Evaluation Contest Chair Script is provided in English (August 6, 2011)

Contest Script (Contest Chair and MC)

Lately, there are cases where both the Contest Chair and the MC can be seen during the contest.
One of the merits of this style is from the point of risk management. If for some reason that one person is absent, two people understand the general flow and this can reduce confusion on the day of the contest. Also it is usually the case that Contest Chair presents the Certificates of Participation, so the MC is free to move the contest forward.

On the other hand it is important for both the MC and Contest Chair to meet and to both fully understand the script so that the contest can be seen to be professionally run without any awkward moments.
